Statement on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

I strive to make my voice studio a welcome place for all students regardless of race, gender, identity, religion or creed. Furthermore, I value students’ diverse backgrounds, acknowledging that each person’s identity and experience can shape their artistry in a unique and positive way.

As a teacher, it is my mission to continue to discover new repertoire, constantly re-evaluating what music should be added to the vocal canon based on the quality of its composition. Many voices from historically underrepresented and undervalued groups deserve more attention, and I highlight these voices in the repertoire that I assign to students. In addition, I have written several articles for the Journal of Singing on women and BIPOC composers, including Libby Larsen, Rebecca Clarke, Harry T. Burleigh and Margaret Bonds.
